Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. However, she left school after just two years in order to take on a acting career. Her path wasn't without its challenges. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. While in New York, she worked at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. It was there that she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
